Time Flies
April 25th, 2009 by Ross

Well, my Latin translations haven’t been confirmed by any kind souls, but I’ve pressed on with Time Flies anyway.  Of the songs I’ve posted this month, this is the one I’m most unsure of.  Parts of it great, but there are bits I’d like to do some considerable work on too.  For that reason, this may not actually be the last version of the song I’ll post.  It is, however, finished enough to count towards my target and be the fourth song I’ve written and recorded this month.

Time Flies

The scale and ambition of this nine minute epic are obviously the reason why it is weaker than I would like in some places.  On the other hand, some sections of the song really stand up well.  I think the last few minutes really are worth listening right through for.

Time Flies

i:  Sabuli Tempus

Standing in the present, watching as time goes past

Beginning with the first days, ending with the last

Time travels from the future into history

Leaving us behind as it goes on its way

It’s an infinite stream and we stand against the flow

Blindly looking forward at a future we can’t know

An infinite expanse of possibilities

A never-ending curve of probabilities

Watch the hourglass as the sand runs away

See tomorrow pass into yesterday

A trickle of grains becomes a deluge

Time is running out – there’s no refuge

You’ll be buried anyway

We’re walking in the sands of time

We take a stand and draw a line

But we don’t have the strength to turn back the tide

And trying to do so is just foolish pride

There is no fountain that grants eternal youth

No magical elixir to stave off time’s abuse

An infinite expanse but we try to stand still

Time and change won’t be denied:  won’t bow to human will

Watch the hourglass as the sand runs away

See tomorrow pass into yesterday

A trickle of grains becomes a deluge

Time is running out – there’s no refuge

You’ll be buried anyway

ii:  Memorium Angiportus

Time is a road with many forks along the way

One for each decision made each and every day

The road ahead is darkened and hidden

The path behind beyond our grasp

We look back as memories rise unbidden

Haunting us from the past

iii:  Carpe Diem

Reach out and take your prizes

When the opportunity arises

Never let them slip away

Reach out and seize the day

Life is short, you get just one

Take your chances as they come

Grasp your dreams and you might see them

Carpe diem

Tempus fugit

Carpe diem
